Continuing Christian Education  (CCE)

The CCE program at St. Hyacinth Catholic Church seeks to partnership with parents and the community of St. Hyacinth to provide developmentally appropriate and authentically Catholic learning experiences so that children and youth may possess the knowledge and skills necessary to live an active, Catholic, Christian life.

The CCE office at St. Hyacinth parish exists to assist parents in bringing their children closer to God and His Church.  We have programs for Pre-K 4-year-olds through 12th grade.  We also prepare students to receive the sacraments of Reconciliation, Eucharist, and Confirmation.

"At the heart of catechesis we find a Person, the Person of Jesus Christ ……Catechesis aims at putting people in communion with Jesus Christ" (Catechism of the Catholic Church, #426)."

St. Hyacinth parish welcomes interim Director of Religious Education (DRE),
Mr. Thomas (Tom) Butler. By “interim”, we mean on transition or temporary status for a period of six months evaluation and discernment for regular status.

Tom, as he is casually called, is a Deer Park resident, registered member of this parish, an Instituted Acolyte serving in our parish church, and is also in the process of applying for Deacon’s formation. He has finished the required FTCM (Formation Towards Christian Ministry) that qualifies him for the position. He has been a volunteer CCE and a Confirmation teacher here for the past few years.

Tom is greatly involved in the CCE program. His son, now a third grader, is enrolled in the program. He is also the founder of St. Hyacinth Book Club, a member of the Knights of Columbus, and is a Chapel of Adoration Coordinator for 6 pm to 12 midnight on Saturdays. Tom is married to Linda, a lawyer working for the Harris County District Attorneys Office. Linda also is a volunteer Catechist and serving with Tom in the adult Confirmation Classes.

On the professional side, Tom has two Bachelor’s Degrees: a BA in Computer Information Systems and BA in Accounting and is currently preparing for his CPA board this summer. Tom has been appointed by Governor Perry as Vice Chair for the Texas Credit Union Commission that oversees 214 State Chartered Credit Unions.

Let us help and support Tom in this very important responsibility he is now holding. His predecessor, Joe Maire, resigned as DRE due to conflict of schedules during the week. Joe will still be helping in CCE as a Sacramental Prep. Coordinator.

Sacramental Preparation

First Reconciliation and First Eucharist is a two year program beginning in first grade CCE. Students who are older than second grade and need to make their sacraments will attend a Sacraments class in addition to regular CCE classes.

Confirmation is also a two-year process usually beginning in ninth grade, but may be started anytime during high school. Students will be required to attend a retreat, perform community and church service, and attend Confirmation sessions in addition to their regular CCE class.

Adult Confirmation is also offered for anyone 18 years old and older. These sessions usually begin in the spring of each year.
